Smart Metro

With smart phone technology gaining heights of popularity, even Delhi metro doesn't want to be left behind. Delhi metro has recently launched a user friendly smart phone mobile application which will give information useful for people who want to travel in the Metro. Like numerous other apps, it works with internet/ G P R S and provides information with G P S availability for passengers.

Now this is certainly a great move by Delhi Metro and shows its enthusiasm to adopt newer technologies willingly and serve passengers in much better way. How much popular this app be, that time will tell but definitely, this initiative is good step and may prove to be very successful as well. After all, who wouldn't like to carry metro maps and all essential information on phones!

This app can be downloaded on ‘I Phones’ and ‘Android’ smart phones with facilities to download the latest version of the application. Using this app, the Metro passengers will be able to search the nearest Metro station, fares for desired travel, information for timings about the first and last train at stations, parking information, travel time for their journey, Metro route information and the Metro map.

It will also provide information on landmarks/tourist spots near Metro Stations, address and contact number of ‘Lost & Found’ cell, details of feeder bus services available at Metro stations with their routes, details about Metro Museum, D M R C Helpline number for assistance, suggestion, complaint and feedback, security helpline number to be contacted during emergency/security threat and other information.

Therefore it will help the passengers to view information related to the train services of D M R C and related information on their own. These key functions will make up the home screen of the smart phone application of the user. Using the tabs available on the home screen, the user can navigate to the desired section/feature and get the required information.

Well now this is impressive! No worries now  if you don't have idea of metro routes or a metro map. All you need is this app.

Of course without net and G P S, it won't help but then how can one get maps without a G P S. If this app becomes really successful then it is surely going to be another helpful service of Delhi Metro.
This application can be downloaded directly from DMRC’s website www.delhimetrorail.com.

No drunken travelling!!?

Don't drink and drive.
This is a golden rule that must be followed for two reasons :
1. Safety
2. You will be caught by police
Well wise people follow this rule for the first reason. And every person need to follow this rule for the second.
But seriously, it is dangerous. A person, drunk and driving is prone to accident harming himself and risking other's life.  But what should a person do in case he/she is drunk?
May be he should use the public transport. But what if he/ she is not allowed to use?

Well this is the case coming up with metro. Well metro has a rule of "no drunken travelling". And now, it is getting stricter by imposing checks at metro entries. D M R C is now going to get breath analyzers to check if any one is drunk at the entry itself and any person drunk would not be allowed to board the metro.

Well some might thing it a good thing. Drunk people are considered mischievous. But the other facet of coin must also be considered.
The rule if imposed properly may create much more problems in Delhi.

Now consider one thing. Suppose some one is going to a party. They enjoy and party hard. Now the person is drunk and needs to return home. He/she must not drive in such case. In this situation if the person cant board metro how is he/ she is supposed to travel?
Before imposing such rules, alternatives must be there. After all now in Delhi, travelling means metro. Denial to boarding metro is just like denial to a basic right!

Now in the same situation, if the person is a girl. She goes to a party and now she is drunk and need to return home. If she is not allowed boarding metro how on earth is she expected to travel home safe? We already know how safe our buses are after all.
So, the core is that from point of view of convenience and safety, this is rather a harsh rule and missed to consider so many factors. All the people who drink are not always mischief maker. They have equal right to travel and be safe.

Phase III

After success of metro phase I and II, work for phase III is on full swing which will take metro around the entire city. While metro now is a part of life for so many Delhites, a lot of people still don't have easy access to the metro. But now, with phase 3, metro is going to reach all those people.

The new Phase III is a 105 km network and would cover Yamuna Vihar-Mukundpur corridor, which will be the longest line in the Delhi Metro network that will cover around 55.9 kms. The major stations on this route will be Mukundpur, Rajouri Garden, Dhaula Kaun, Anand Vihar and culminate at Yamuna Vihar. It will also cover outer area like the Bawana and the inner most circle like the Jamia Nagar, which is a very congested area.

The HUDA city center to central secretariat line will be extended to the Red Fort. The best thing about the Phase III metro is that it will have 23 interchangeable stations for seamless connectivity. Now this is going to be a significant achievement for the Delhi Metro and a great relief for commuters.

Apart from this, another addition is the coverage of the Jamia Milia University that will extend from the Nehru place and go up to cover the outer Ring road. It is supposed to be a busy line with the university and school students commuting daily on this route. Kalkaji is the interchange station here and will be beneficial to the commuters who are largely students.

Talking about the violet line i.e. from Central Secretariat to Badarpur, is going to be extended from both ends providing easy travelling to Faridabad. With a length of 43.21 km, this line will have 32 stations- 21 elevated and 11 underground and 5 interchangeable stations at : Mandi House, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate, Kalkaji and Lajpat Nagar. This will provide direct connectivity from kashmiri gate to Faridabad and ease rush at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmiri Gate.

The extension from Badarpur to Fridabad will include 9 stations : Sarai, NHPC Chowk, Mewala Maharajpur, Sector 27A, Badkal Mor, Old Faridabad, Ajronda, Faridabad New Town and YMCA Chowk.

From the other end, the line is being extended from Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate via Mandi House. This 9.37-km underground corridor will have seven upcoming stations at Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid, Red Fort and Kashmere Gate.

At Mandi House, the line will provide interchange with the Dwarka-Noida-Anand Vihar corridor, while at Kashmere Gate it will provide connectivity to the Dilshad Garden-Rithala corridor.

At Central Secretariat, the corridor will connect with the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line, while at Kalkaji, it will provide transition to the upcoming Janakpuri to Botanical Garden Corridor. At Lajpat Nagar, the line will connect with the longest proposed corridor of Delhi Metro i.e. Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar, which is currently under construction.

So, by 2016, Delhites are going to get access to almost entire Delhi and better reach to NCR region.

Women Safety

One thing make me feel happy and proud about metro. That is the safety. Seriously girls are much more safer in Delhi since start of metro. Going through my newspaper I came across an incident showing safety concerns of Delhi Metro. The incident in brief is here-
A group of girls along with there 1 male friend boarded metro from Gurgaon to Delhi. So the incident started at IFFCO chawk station. There some lousy guys passed lewd comments to the girls. On calling for help, they were helped by CISF officials. They scolded those guys and warned them and safely let the girls in next metro. But somehow those guys managed to stalk the girls and speak foul to them. But again on calling DMRC help line they were helped by CISF officials and those guys finally handed over to police under anti-stalking law.

Well this is one incident and there are such others where people are indeed helped in need by metro safety. This shows the well established safety measures by Delhi metro.
Metro is well equipped by metal detectors and necessary safety requirements. There are female officials as well and surprise checks are also often done to ensure men do not enter ladies coach. Safety is not limited to just women though. There are random visits in trains by officials in random coaches. Then we cant forget the number of security cameras all over the station premises. Proper fines are there for breach of rules and these are followed as well.

So if you are looking forward for a safe mode of travelling, definitely metro would be your choice.

Metro fares

Well talking about metro fares, if compared to the services, then the fares are really very reasonable and affordable. That's the reason why we see such a huge crowd in the metro daily. This is the most important reason of its success. Well yes, crowd is there. It has to be there after all metro is the most convenient transport in Delhi. Almost every Delhite travels in metro. It cant even be imagined that any person living or visiting Delhi can be there who hasnt travelled in metro. The reason is ofcourse the fares. The best service given by Delhi metro in this context is smartcards. Well it is the need of daily commuters so that they can travel without standing in cues. Smartcard holders also get benefit of 10% discount on every travel. So it is a good scheme. Then for tourists or few day visitors also metro has facility of unlimited travel metro cards.

Huge network of metro

The network of metro is also a great work. It consists of six lines with a total length of 189.63 kilometers  with 142 stations, of which 35 are underground, five are at-grade, and the remainder are elevated. All stations have escalators, elevators, and tactile tiles to guide the visually impaired from station entrances to trains. It has a combination of elevated, at-grade, and underground lines for all different routes according to the need and space.

Delhi metro began operation in 2002(24 December 2002) and is being built and maintained by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Besides construction and operation of Delhi metro, D.M.R.C is also involved in the planning and implementation of metro rail, monorail and high-speed rail projects in India and providing consultancy services to other metro projects in the country as well as abroad.

Planning for the metro started in 1984, when the Delhi Development Authority and the Urban Arts Commission came up with a proposal for developing a multi-modal transport system for the city. The Government of India and the Government of Delhi jointly set up the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) registered on 3 May 1995 under the Companies Act, 1956. Construction started in 1998, and the first section, on the Red Line, opened in 2002, followed by the Yellow Line in 2004, the Blue Line in 2005, its branch line in 2009, the Green and Violet Lines in 2010, and the Delhi Airport Metro Express in 2011.

Metro was planned to be built in phases spread over around 20 years as with each phase having a target of five years. Phase I (65 km) and Phase II (125 km) were completed in 2006 and 2011, respectively, and Phase III and Phase IV are scheduled for completion in 2016 and 2021, respectively. Work on Phase III has already started while planning for Phase IV has begun. Ex-chief of D.M.R.C hinted that by the time Phase IV is completed, the city will need Phase V to cope with rising population and transport needs. Work for construction of phase IV might start before completion of phase III.
So a lot of more stations and areas are soon going to be covered. Surely metro is going to reach each and every part of Delhi-NCR in upcoming future.
